Data projects tend towards failure.

Not necessarily because of anything anyone did but rather because of the things people don’t do.

Here is a brief list of all of the things you should do if you want your data project to fail:

  1. Don’t have an executive sponsor.
  2. Do have daily check-ins
  3. Avoid implementing data quality checks
  4. Don’t bother understanding the business process
  5. Focus on the technology rather than the outcome
  6. Deliver everything at once
  7. Take everything people tell you at face value; don’t challenge any assumptions
  8. Don’t have a data model (What are those anyways)

So if your project feels like it’s wavering and on the bring of failure, look and see if you are doing any of these things.

All the Best,

Tucker
