Data quality impacts everything, especially when building a single source of truth. But where do you fix quality issues? Often, it’s a choice between fixing data in the System of Record (where data is first captured) or in the Decision Support System (DSS), where data supports business insights and decisions. Typically, data flows from the System of Record to the DSS. Which makes it easy to identify where the issues is. But identifying the issue is only half the job—the real challenge is deciding where to fix it. If the data is 100% correct in the System of Record, then the DSS probably needs the adjustment. However, if only 90% is reliable, there’s a choice to make:
The right choice depends on your team’s workload, the business impact, and the issue’s importance. If it’s an order not being closed, fix it at the source. If it’s something minor, like inconsistent capitalization, consider handling it in the DSS. All the Best, Tucker |
